Notebooks in Movies

A while back, a reader suggested I do a post on notebooks in movies. I couldn’t think of that many examples myself, as I don’t see that many movies, but this photo from the movie Baby Mama reminded me of the topic! I love earnest and eager Tina Fey efficiently taking notes while Amy Poehler goofs off!

Chime in with a comment if you can recommend any other movies featuring notebooks, or post a photo on my Facebook page!

  1. Being a huge fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, I was so excited when a notebook and pen appeared in the movie “Inception”. Can anyone identify them for me, please?

  2. Hide and Seek – Dakota Fanning’s character had a little red diary her father gave her, which had a short appearance in the movie.

The Woodsman – Main character writes in a spiral bound notebook at his desk by the window overlooking the playground.

Atonement – I vaguely remember a notebook in that one.

Clueless – Didn’t Alicia Silverstone have a pink diary in that movie? :)

Those are a few that popped in mind

  3. My Life Without Me – main character write in a notebook with pink pages.

Sorry I don’t mean to spam your comments box, I wish I had written all of these in one comment but didn’t remember them all in the same moment.

  4. I probably shouldn’t reply because this isn’t a movie, but in a recent CSI episode a very well-worn reporter-style Moleskine was featured :D

  5. Two examples that immediately come to mind for me are Cruel Intentions and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. The lead characters in both movies kept private journals that (spoiler) made prominent appearances towards the end.

Also some not-a-movie examples: the Journal of Impossible Things AND River Song’s “Spoilers!” journal from Doctor Who.

  6. Most of Christopher Nolan’s films feature notebooks (The Prestige quite heavily) – it wouldn’t surprise me if he was a fan of this site – and Stanley Kubrick had a thing about stationery. Also, I posted a comment a month or so ago about the appearance of a Moleskine Cahier in Seven Psychopaths.

  7. Heavenly Creatures has a famous real diary, Pauline Rieper’s. In the film her dad gives it to her for Xmas and says “I hope it’s all right. It’s from Whitcombe and Tombs.” Her smile says it’s just perfect. You see the cover, the first pages with advertising on them, and she writes in it several times. In the beach scene Juliet is also shown writing story notes in what may be a scribbler. Later on when she gets sick with TB, she coughs blood on her school notebook.

In The Exorcist in the early scene where Chris puts Regan to bed and they talk about what to do on her birthday, you can see a black and white composition book on Regan’s nightstand.

In The Go-Between (book and film), Leo has a diary which he uses partly as a magic grimoire. There’s a lot more about it in the book, of course.

The Silent Twins, film by Jon Amiel about June and Jennifer Gibbons, shows them writing in diaries and notebooks.

I just saw an episode of Golden Girls where Dorothy and Blanche break into Rose’s locked diary, a very standard one with a green leather cover, and they read about the “two pigs” she lives with. Turns out it was a farm journal from years ago and she really meant pigs.

  8. I should clarify that Kubrick’s stationery obsession was a private thing and didn’t actually figure heavily in his work. But last night I saw some of the film Notorious and in it Biggie Smalls uses his time in prison to fill several Mead Composition Books with lyrics.

  9. Se7en.

The Kevin Spacey character fills hundreds of marble comp books with his creepy musings.

    Something to aspire to……sort of.

  10. Hmm, and nobody has yet mentioned “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”. Dr. Jones’ (Sean Connery) notebook is so prominent in that movie that it almost deserves it’s own credit.

  11. Watching one of my favorite old movies recently, “The Great Escape”. In it, Nigel Stock, who played Flight Lt. Denys Cavendish, used a notebook repeatedly in his surveying calculations.

  12. Matt Damon uses a twin-wired notebook with a framed grid ruling in The Martian, when he counts the number of meals left, or when he writes formulas when getting prepared for growing potatoes… And I’m sure this notebook is one from my company, and that I invented !

  13. The Counsellor, Directed by Ridley Scott.
Michael Fassbender keeps jotting everything down.

  14. Shooter starring mark wahlberg, agent memphis of FBI is constantly using his moleskine while investigating the shooting.

National Treasure, Nicholas Cage has a Moleskine, i believe, where he puts the inscription from the meerschaum pipe.

Indiana Jones, The last Crusade, the senior jones diary did seem quite like the older moleskines.

that’s just some of the movies which came to my mind.
