Some Addicts Can Let Go

Featured here not long ago as a Notebook Addict of the Week, Mr. Bill had quite a few Moleskines. But he decided to give them all away! I’ve probably given away a notebook or two over the years, when I was positive it was something I didn’t really like and would never use. And I’ve bought notebooks specifically to give them as gifts, usually when I already owned an identical one for myself! But otherwise, I think I still have every notebook I’ve ever owned. The thought of getting rid of them is just… unthinkable!

Have you ever down-sized your notebook collection? Or are you a hoarder like me?

  1. I think I’ve decided to focus on the Clairefontaine “Basics” notebooks now; Exaclair sent me one as a review sample and I love it so far. However, I doubt the “hoard pile” will ever recur. For one thing, they only come in two colors!

That pile was actually acquired over the course of two years, and only when I got ALL of my Moleskines together did I realize how many I actually had.

  2. I’m a hoarder! I keep what I like; I don’t like to share. For gifts I buy a new notebook and specific to the person’s likes.

  3. I’ve thrown away notebooks that have been ruined . . . water damage, for instance . . . and given new ones as gifts, but never given away one of my own.

  4. Back in the late 70s I was working in a building that had a huge bookstore on three floors. Those “Anything Books” were really popular. I guess they still make them, but the covers on the ones back then… I remember one that had the alphabet embossed on the cover, silver on dark blue, a lot of Celtic designs… sigh. Most of my friends used them for their Book of Shadows. I had about SIXTY of these things, and in an effort to downsize my blank book collection I gave most of them to a friend. I must have been insane. Those he didn’t want went to Sally Ann’s, where I devoutly hope they made some impoverished blank book addict very happy.
